Ponte della Libertà is a large bridge that connects Venice with the mainland of Italy. It was built between 1930 and 1933 and was designed by engineer Eugenio Miozzi. The bridge is 3.8 kilometers long and is made up of three sections, with the largest being a 2.2 kilometer steel section that crosses the Venetian Lagoon. Ponte della Libertà was constructed to alleviate the traffic congestion in Venice and to provide a faster and more efficient way for people to travel to and from the city. It is considered an important engineering feat of the 20th century and has become an iconic symbol of Venice.
